Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Leak-rate thresholds, repair deadlines, extensions and records.
The question
A leak on a 300-pound R-22 chiller was repaired after the system was evacuated. When must the initial verification test be done?
- Within 10 days after the chiller returns to normal operation
- Before any refrigerant is added back to the chillerCorrect answer
- Only after the full charge has been restored
- At the next annual leak inspection
Why “Before any refrigerant is added back to the chiller” is correct
For repairs that required evacuating the appliance or a portion of it, the initial verification test must be done before adding any refrigerant. It confirms the repaired leaks hold before refrigerant is put at risk.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Within 10 days after the chiller returns to normal operation — That describes the timing of the follow-up verification test.
- Only after the full charge has been restored — Testing after recharging defeats the purpose of the initial test.
- At the next annual leak inspection — The annual inspection is a separate requirement and is far too late.
