The question

Which of these repairs on a 70-pound R-410A system is not a major repair, assuming the opening is small and brief?

  • Replacing the evaporator coil
  • Replacing the condenser coil
  • Replacing the expansion valveCorrect answer
  • Replacing the compressor

Why “Replacing the expansion valve” is correct

Only removal of the compressor, condenser, evaporator or auxiliary heat exchange coil, or a large and long opening, makes a repair major. A thermostatic expansion valve is not on that list, so swapping it with a small, brief opening is non-major.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Replacing the evaporator coil — The evaporator is one of the four listed components.
  • Replacing the condenser coil — The condenser is one of the four listed components.
  • Replacing the compressor — The compressor is one of the four listed components.
