The question
Under the definition in 40 CFR 82.152, which of these jobs is a major repair?
- Replacing the compressorCorrect answer
- Replacing a Schrader valve core
- Adding refrigerant through the service port
- Tightening a flare nut
Why “Replacing the compressor” is correct
A major repair is one that removes the compressor, condenser, evaporator or auxiliary heat exchange coil, or uncovers more than 4 square inches of flow area for more than 15 minutes. Replacing the compressor removes one of the listed components.
Source: 40 CFR 82.152
Why the other answers are wrong
- Replacing a Schrader valve core — A valve core is not one of the listed components and the opening is tiny.
- Adding refrigerant through the service port — Adding refrigerant does not remove a component; connecting hoses is not even opening the appliance.
- Tightening a flare nut — Tightening a fitting removes no listed component.
