To what level must the refrigerant be recovered?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A worker removes refrigerant from a scrapped dehumidifier before disposal. To what level must the refrigerant be recovered?
- No set level, because no certification is required for disposal
- The same 80 or 90 percent, or 4-inch vacuum, used for serviceCorrect answer
- Down to 0 psig
- Down to 10 inches of Hg vacuum
Why “The same 80 or 90 percent, or 4-inch vacuum, used for service” is correct
Section 82.155(a) says persons recovering refrigerant from a small appliance for disposal must evacuate it to the levels in 82.156(b). Those are the same levels a technician must meet before opening the appliance for service.
Source: 40 CFR 82.155(a); 40 CFR 82.156(b)
Why the other answers are wrong
- No set level, because no certification is required for disposal — Disposal does not need certification, but 82.155(a) still sets the levels.
- Down to 0 psig — Zero psig is not the small-appliance disposal level.
- Down to 10 inches of Hg vacuum — Ten inches is a Table 1 level for some larger appliances.
