Which test can it pass to be certified?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
Recovery equipment will be used only to remove refrigerant from small appliances before they are scrapped. Which test can it pass to be certified?
- Reaching 25 mm Hg absolute on a calibrated micron gauge
- Recovering 100 percent of a test charge
- Reaching a 4-inch vacuum on a properly calibrated gaugeCorrect answer
- Reaching 0 psig within 10 minutes
Why “Reaching a 4-inch vacuum on a properly calibrated gauge” is correct
Section 82.158(e)(5) says equipment used to evacuate refrigerant from small appliances before disposal may also be certified if it can achieve a four-inch vacuum when tested with a properly calibrated pressure gauge.
Source: 40 CFR 82.158(e)
Why the other answers are wrong
- Reaching 25 mm Hg absolute on a calibrated micron gauge — That level belongs to low-pressure appliances, not small-appliance disposal equipment.
- Recovering 100 percent of a test charge — No certification standard requires complete recovery.
- Reaching 0 psig within 10 minutes — No timed test of this kind is in the rule.
