What is it called?
Recovery techniques · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, access valves, passive recovery and solderless fittings.
The question
A recovery method uses the appliance's own compressor or internal pressure to move refrigerant into a container. What is it called?
- System-dependent, or passive, recoveryCorrect answer
- Self-contained, or active, recovery
- Reclamation to AHRI 700 purity standards
- Recycling
Why “System-dependent, or passive, recovery” is correct
System-dependent recovery equipment requires the assistance of components in the appliance to remove refrigerant (82.152). EPA's test topics call it "passive" recovery, and it is common on small appliances.
Source: 40 CFR 82.152; EPA: Test Topics
Why the other answers are wrong
- Self-contained, or active, recovery — Self-contained equipment works without help from the appliance's components.
- Reclamation to AHRI 700 purity standards — Reclamation is reprocessing used refrigerant to new-product specifications, not removing it from an appliance.
- Recycling — Recycling is cleaning refrigerant for reuse, not the method of getting it out of the appliance.
