An uncertified helper may recover refrigerant on a job only if what is true?
Section 608 regulations · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Pressure classes, recovery equipment certification, AHRI 700, the sales restriction and the venting ban.
The question
An uncertified helper may recover refrigerant on a job only if what is true?
- The helper is a registered, closely supervised apprenticeCorrect answer
- The helper has already passed the Core section of the exam
- The helper works only on systems holding under 50 pounds
- The customer has agreed to it in writing beforehand
Why “The helper is a registered, closely supervised apprentice” is correct
40 CFR 82.161(a)(2) exempts apprentices who are closely and continually supervised by a certified technician. An apprentice must be registered with the Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship, and may be an apprentice for only two years from first registering.

Why the other answers are wrong
- The helper has already passed the Core section of the exam — Passing Core alone does not certify a person for any equipment type.
- The helper works only on systems holding under 50 pounds — Charge size does not create an exemption from certification.
- The customer has agreed to it in writing beforehand — Customer consent does not replace certification.
