Under ASHRAE Standard 15, what device must an equipment room with an R-123 chiller have?
Safety · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
ASHRAE Standard 15 equipment-room requirements and refrigerant sensors.
The question
Under ASHRAE Standard 15, what device must an equipment room with an R-123 chiller have?
- A sprinkler head above the chiller
- A floor drain beside the rupture disc
- A carbon dioxide extinguisher
- A refrigerant sensor that detects R-123Correct answer
Why “A refrigerant sensor that detects R-123” is correct
EPA's test topics list a refrigerant sensor as an ASHRAE Standard 15 equipment-room requirement for R-123. The sensor warns people of a leak before they are exposed to harmful levels; R-123's exposure limit is 50 ppm. Current editions of Standard 15 require such a detector, set at or below the refrigerant's OEL, for every refrigerant.

Why the other answers are wrong
- A sprinkler head above the chiller — Sprinklers are fire protection, not refrigerant monitoring.
- A floor drain beside the rupture disc — A drain does not detect refrigerant.
- A carbon dioxide extinguisher — An extinguisher does not detect refrigerant.
