Through which connection should refrigerant be charged into a low-pressure centrifugal chiller?

Recharging techniques · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Charging vapor before liquid, and charging centrifugals through the evaporator valve.

The question

Through which connection should refrigerant be charged into a low-pressure centrifugal chiller?

  • The purge unit connection
  • The evaporator charging valveCorrect answer
  • The compressor discharge line
  • The condenser relief connection

Why “The evaporator charging valve” is correct

EPA's test topics state that centrifugal chillers should be charged through the evaporator charging valve. Charging vapor first and then liquid through that valve is the standard procedure for these machines.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The purge unit connection — The purge connection removes noncondensables; it is not for charging.
  • The compressor discharge line — Centrifugals are not charged through the compressor discharge.
  • The condenser relief connection — Relief connections are for pressure protection, not charging.
