To what temperature should the oil in a low-pressure chiller be heated before it is drained?

Recovery techniques · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Liquid then vapor, heating oil, protecting water tubes, and high-pressure cut-outs.

The question

To what temperature should the oil in a low-pressure chiller be heated before it is drained?

  • 85 °F
  • 130 °FCorrect answer
  • 50 °F
  • 180 °F

Why “130 °F” is correct

EPA's test topics call for heating the oil to 130 °F before removing it. Warm oil holds less dissolved refrigerant, so less refrigerant leaves with the oil.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 85 °F — 85 °F is the boiling-point line used in the pressurization rule, not the oil temperature.
  • 50 °F — 50 °F is too cool; the oil would still hold a lot of refrigerant.
  • 180 °F — 180 °F is hotter than the accepted practice.
