What are the deadlines for the retirement plan?
Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Allowable annual leak rates for low-pressure appliances.
The question
The owner of a leaking R-11 chiller decides to retire it instead of repairing it. What are the deadlines for the retirement plan?
- Write the plan within 60 days; finish the work within two years
- Write the plan within 30 days; finish the work within six months
- Write the plan within one year; finish the work within five years
- Write the plan within 30 days; finish the work within one yearCorrect answer
Why “Write the plan within 30 days; finish the work within one year” is correct
40 CFR 82.157(h) requires a retrofit or retirement plan within 30 days of the appliance exceeding its leak rate when the owner chooses not to repair. The work must be finished within one year of the plan's date unless EPA grants more time.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Write the plan within 60 days; finish the work within two years — Both periods are too long; the rule allows 30 days and one year.
- Write the plan within 30 days; finish the work within six months — The work may take up to one year from the plan date, not six months.
- Write the plan within one year; finish the work within five years — These periods are far longer than the rule allows.
