How often must the system be audited or calibrated?

Leak detection · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Pressurizing low-pressure systems for leak tests, signs of leaks, inspections and reports.

The question

An owner monitors an R-11 chiller with an automatic leak detection system instead of doing the required leak inspections. How often must the system be audited or calibrated?

  • Once a yearCorrect answer
  • Once a month
  • Every three years
  • Only when it is first installed

Why “Once a year” is correct

40 CFR 82.157(g)(4) waives the quarterly or annual leak inspections on parts of an appliance that are continuously monitored by an automatic leak detection system. That system must be audited or calibrated annually, and the owner keeps records of it.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Once a month — The rule requires an annual audit or calibration, not monthly.
  • Every three years — Three years is too long; the rule says annually.
  • Only when it is first installed — A one-time setup is not enough; the system must be audited or calibrated every year.
