During a non-major repair on a low-pressure chiller pressurized to 0 psig, the section being worked on…
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels for low-pressure appliances, and major versus non-major repairs.
The question
During a non-major repair on a low-pressure chiller pressurized to 0 psig, the section being worked on cannot be isolated from the rest of the machine. What does 40 CFR 82.156(a)(1)(ii) require?
- Run the purge unit for the whole repair
- Raise the pressure to 10 psig first
- Shut off all water flow through the tubes
- Cover the openingsCorrect answer
Why “Cover the openings” is correct
When a low-pressure appliance is brought to 0 psig for a non-major repair, the rule adds that persons must cover openings when isolation is not possible. This limits air and moisture getting into the rest of the machine and refrigerant getting out.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Run the purge unit for the whole repair — The rule asks for covered openings, not continuous purging.
- Raise the pressure to 10 psig first — The rule sets a ceiling of 0 psig, not a target of 10 psig.
- Shut off all water flow through the tubes — Stopping water flow is not part of this rule and risks other problems.
