The question

A shop buys a new recovery machine in 2025 to use on R-123 chillers. What must be true of the machine?

  • It is approved by the chiller manufacturer
  • It is certified by an EPA-approved equipment testing organizationCorrect answer
  • It is registered with EPA by the technician
  • It is certified by the organization that tested and certified the technician

Why “It is certified by an EPA-approved equipment testing organization” is correct

Recovery and recycling equipment made on or after November 15, 1993 must be certified by an EPA-approved equipment testing organization for the type of appliance it is meant for. A machine labeled for low-pressure appliances has been shown to reach the 25 mm Hg absolute level.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • It is approved by the chiller manufacturer — Chiller manufacturer approval does not meet the federal certification requirement.
  • It is registered with EPA by the technician — Technicians do not register recovery machines with EPA.
  • It is certified by the organization that tested and certified the technician — Technician certifying organizations do not certify recovery equipment.
