Where is the filter-drier usually installed in an R-22 system, and what passes through it?
Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.
The question
Where is the filter-drier usually installed in an R-22 system, and what passes through it?
- In the liquid line, carrying high-pressure liquidCorrect answer
- In the discharge line, carrying hot vapor
- Between the evaporator and accumulator, carrying a liquid-vapor mix
- In the compressor crankcase, holding oil
Why “In the liquid line, carrying high-pressure liquid” is correct
The filter-drier is normally fitted in the liquid line ahead of the metering device. High-pressure liquid flows through it, and it traps moisture and debris before they reach the metering device.

Why the other answers are wrong
- In the discharge line, carrying hot vapor — The discharge line is not where a liquid-line drier is fitted.
- Between the evaporator and accumulator, carrying a liquid-vapor mix — A suction-side location carries low-pressure vapor, not the main drier.
- In the compressor crankcase, holding oil — Driers are not installed inside the crankcase.
