Using recovery equipment made in 2017, what evacuation level is required?

Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.

The question

An R-407A appliance with a 260-pound charge is being dismantled for scrap. Using recovery equipment made in 2017, what evacuation level is required?

  • 0 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 4 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 10 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
  • 15 inches of Hg vacuum

Why “10 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct

Recycling an appliance for scrap is disposal, which requires the Table 1 levels. R-407A is high-pressure, and a high-pressure appliance of 200 pounds or more needs 10 inches of Hg vacuum with equipment made on or after November 15, 1993.

  • 0 inches of Hg vacuum — 0 inches applies to high-pressure appliances under 200 pounds.
  • 4 inches of Hg vacuum — 4 inches is for the same row with pre-1993 equipment.
  • 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches is for medium-pressure appliances of 200 pounds or more.
