How often must it be given leak inspections afterward?

Leak detection · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Signs of leaks in high-pressure systems and leak testing before charging.

The question

A 150-pound R-22 comfort-cooling chiller exceeded its 10 percent trigger rate and was repaired. How often must it be given leak inspections afterward?

  • Every three months for four quarters
  • Once a month for a year
  • Once a year until it stays under the rate for a yearCorrect answer
  • No further inspections once the repair has passed its tests

Why “Once a year until it stays under the rate for a year” is correct

Comfort cooling appliances that exceed the trigger rate get a leak inspection once per calendar year until the owner shows, through leak rate calculations, that the appliance has not exceeded the rate for one year. Quarterly inspections apply only to commercial and industrial process systems of 500 pounds or more.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Every three months for four quarters — Quarterly inspections are for commercial and industrial process refrigeration of 500 pounds or more.
  • Once a month for a year — No monthly schedule appears in the rule.
  • No further inspections once the repair has passed its tests — Inspections continue until the appliance stays under the rate for a year.
