What must be used between the nitrogen cylinder and the system?
Safety · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Hermetic compressors under vacuum and other high-pressure hazards.
The question
A technician is pressurizing an R-22 system with nitrogen for a leak test. What must be used between the nitrogen cylinder and the system?
- A pressure regulatorCorrect answer
- A recovery machine
- A filter-drier
- A sight glass
Why “A pressure regulator” is correct
A full nitrogen cylinder holds far more pressure than any refrigeration system can safely take. A pressure regulator limits the pressure fed to the system, and a relief valve downstream adds protection.

Why the other answers are wrong
- A recovery machine — A recovery machine is not used to pressurize with nitrogen.
- A filter-drier — A filter-drier does not control pressure.
- A sight glass — A sight glass does not control pressure.
