What should the technician do?

Recovery techniques · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Recovering liquid first, speeding recovery, and avoiding cross-contamination.

The question

After shutting off the recovery machine at the required vacuum, the gauge on an R-407C system climbs back toward 0 psig. What should the technician do?

  • Open the system right away
  • Vent the remaining vapor
  • Add nitrogen to push the vapor out, then open it
  • Resume recovery until the level holdsCorrect answer

Why “Resume recovery until the level holds” is correct

A rising pressure shows refrigerant remains in the system or in the oil. Recovery must continue until the required level holds, because the technician must verify that level before opening.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Open the system right away — The required level has not truly been reached, so opening now would release refrigerant.
  • Vent the remaining vapor — Venting the remaining refrigerant is prohibited.
  • Add nitrogen to push the vapor out, then open it — Adding nitrogen does not remove the refrigerant still in the system.
