Where is the liquid refrigerant normally found when the system is off?

Recovery techniques · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Recovering liquid first, speeding recovery, and avoiding cross-contamination.

The question

A technician wants to recover liquid first from a 150-pound R-22 system with a receiver. Where is the liquid refrigerant normally found when the system is off?

  • In the suction line and accumulator only
  • In the receiver and liquid lineCorrect answer
  • In the discharge line
  • In the compressor crankcase only

Why “In the receiver and liquid line” is correct

The receiver stores high-pressure liquid that leaves the condenser, and the liquid line carries it to the metering device. Connecting there lets the technician draw off liquid first.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • In the suction line and accumulator only — The suction side mainly holds vapor; any liquid there is not the bulk of the charge.
  • In the discharge line — The discharge line carries hot vapor from the compressor.
  • In the compressor crankcase only — Some refrigerant dissolves in crankcase oil, but the bulk of the liquid is in the receiver.
