Which piece of equipment does that date refer to?

Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.

The question

Table 1 gives different vacuum levels for equipment made before and after November 15, 1993. Which piece of equipment does that date refer to?

  • The appliance being serviced
  • The vacuum gauge used to check the level
  • The refrigerant cylinder
  • The recovery or recycling equipmentCorrect answer

Why “The recovery or recycling equipment” is correct

The Table 1 columns are labelled by when the recovery and/or recycling equipment was manufactured or imported. The age of the appliance being serviced does not change the required level.

Source: 40 CFR 82.156(a), Table 1

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The appliance being serviced — The appliance's age is not used to pick the Table 1 column.
  • The vacuum gauge used to check the level — The gauge's age plays no part in the rule.
  • The refrigerant cylinder — Cylinder dates relate to DOT requalification, not evacuation levels.
