Which certification does a technician need to repair its sealed system?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A commercial ice machine is factory-sealed with 6 pounds of R-404A. Which certification does a technician need to repair its sealed system?
- Type I, because it was sealed at the factory
- Type III, because ice machines are low-pressure
- None, because ice machines are exempt
- Type II, because it is over the 5-pound limitCorrect answer
Why “Type II, because it is over the 5-pound limit” is correct
A small appliance holds 5 pounds or less. At 6 pounds, this machine is a high-pressure appliance outside the small-appliance definition, and servicing it requires Type II certification, or Universal.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Type I, because it was sealed at the factory — Factory sealing is not enough; the charge must also be 5 pounds or less.
- Type III, because ice machines are low-pressure — R-404A is not a low-pressure refrigerant.
- None, because ice machines are exempt — Ice machines with non-exempt refrigerants are covered by Section 608.
