Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.

The question

A water cooler holds 12 ounces of refrigerant and its compressor runs. Using recovery equipment made in 2008, how much must be recovered at minimum?

  • 10.8 ouncesCorrect answer
  • 9.6 ounces
  • 12 ounces
  • 8.4 ounces

Why “10.8 ounces” is correct

Equipment made on or after November 15, 1993 must recover 90 percent when the appliance compressor works. Ninety percent of 12 ounces is 10.8 ounces; evacuating to 4 inches of Hg vacuum would also satisfy the rule.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 9.6 ounces — That is 80 percent, which applies to older equipment or a compressor that is not working.
  • 12 ounces — The rule does not require the full charge.
  • 8.4 ounces — That is 70 percent, below any small-appliance level.
