Before choosing how to recover with a passive device, what should a technician find out first about a small appliance?
Recovery techniques · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, access valves, passive recovery and solderless fittings.
The question
Before choosing how to recover with a passive device, what should a technician find out first about a small appliance?
- Whether its compressor runsCorrect answer
- How old the appliance's door seals are
- The brand of the recovery cylinder
- Whether the condenser coil is clean
Why “Whether its compressor runs” is correct
A working compressor can be run to push refrigerant out, and with newer equipment the target is 90 percent. A dead compressor calls for access on both sides, heating and striking the compressor, and an 80 percent target.

Why the other answers are wrong
- How old the appliance's door seals are — Door seals do not affect refrigerant recovery.
- The brand of the recovery cylinder — The cylinder brand does not change the method.
- Whether the condenser coil is clean — A dirty coil does not decide the recovery approach.
