In a recycling machine, what do the replaceable core filter-driers reduce?

The three Rs · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

What recover, recycle and reclaim each mean.

The question

In a recycling machine, what do the replaceable core filter-driers reduce?

  • The amount of refrigerant in the cylinder
  • Chlorine content of the refrigerant
  • The refrigerant's ozone depletion potential
  • Moisture, acidity and particlesCorrect answer

Why “Moisture, acidity and particles” is correct

40 CFR 82.152 notes that recycled refrigerant is generally cleaned by oil separation and passes through devices such as replaceable core filter-driers, which reduce moisture, acidity and particulate matter.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The amount of refrigerant in the cylinder — Filter-driers clean refrigerant; they are not meant to reduce the amount.
  • Chlorine content of the refrigerant — Chlorine is part of the refrigerant molecule and is not filtered out.
  • The refrigerant's ozone depletion potential — ODP is a property of the chemical and does not change.
