Recovery techniques · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Keeping refrigerants unmixed and what affects recovery speed.
The question
The operating instructions for a certified recovery machine conflict with nothing in the Section 608 rules. How must the technician use the machine?
- However the technician prefers
- Only with the factory hoses removed
- According to the manufacturer's directionsCorrect answer
- Only after it has been recertified that year
Why “According to the manufacturer's directions” is correct
40 CFR 82.156(g) requires all recovery and recycling equipment to be used according to the manufacturer's directions unless those directions conflict with the rule. Using it correctly is how the technician reaches the required recovery levels.

Why the other answers are wrong
- However the technician prefers — The rule requires following the manufacturer's directions.
- Only with the factory hoses removed — No rule calls for removing the hoses.
- Only after it has been recertified that year — Technicians do not have to recertify machines each year.
