The question

Who may buy R-410A in a 25-pound cylinder for servicing a residential split system?

  • Anyone over 18 with a valid ID
  • A Section 609 certified technician
  • A Section 608 certified technician or an employer of oneCorrect answer
  • A homeowner who signs a statement saying how it will be used

Why “A Section 608 certified technician or an employer of one” is correct

The sales restriction in 40 CFR 82.154(c) allows refrigerant for stationary equipment to be sold only to Section 608 certified technicians, or to employers who show they employ at least one, with limited exceptions such as sales for resale.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Anyone over 18 with a valid ID — Age and ID do not meet the sales restriction; certification does.
  • A Section 609 certified technician — Section 609 technicians may buy only refrigerant intended for motor vehicle air conditioners.
  • A homeowner who signs a statement saying how it will be used — A signed statement does not replace certification for a buyer who will use the refrigerant.
