The question
A technician is paid to repair car air conditioners. Which certification does that work require?
- Section 608 Type I certification
- Section 608 Type II certification
- Section 609 MVAC certificationCorrect answer
- Section 608 Universal certification
Why “Section 609 MVAC certification” is correct
Motor vehicle air conditioners are not serviced under the Section 608 technician program. Under 40 CFR 82.161(a)(1)(vi), people who service MVACs for pay must be certified under 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart B, the Section 609 program.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Section 608 Type I certification — Type I covers small appliances such as window units and household refrigerators.
- Section 608 Type II certification — Type II covers stationary medium-, high- and very high-pressure equipment, not cars.
- Section 608 Universal certification — Universal covers all stationary types but is not the MVAC certification.
