The question

Under 40 CFR 82.152, how is an appliance using R-134a classified?

  • Low-pressure
  • Medium-pressureCorrect answer
  • High-pressure
  • Very high-pressure

Why “Medium-pressure” is correct

R-134a has a saturation pressure between 45 and 170 psia at 104 °F, so it is a medium-pressure refrigerant. The rule lists R-114, R-124, R-12, R-134a and R-500 as medium-pressure examples. Type II certification covers medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Low-pressure — Low-pressure refrigerants such as R-123 are below 45 psia at 104 °F.
  • High-pressure — High-pressure examples are refrigerants like R-22 and R-410A.
  • Very high-pressure — Very high-pressure refrigerants such as R-23 have critical temperatures below 104 °F.
