Phaseout dates and the venting prohibitions at servicing, at disposal and for substitutes.
The question
In the United States, production of CFC refrigerants such as R-12 for general use ended on which date?
- January 1, 1992
- January 1, 1996Correct answer
- January 1, 2010
- January 1, 2020
Why “January 1, 1996” is correct
U.S. production and import of CFCs ended at the end of 1995, so from January 1, 1996 no new CFC refrigerant was made for general use. Equipment still running on CFCs is serviced with recovered, recycled or reclaimed refrigerant.

Why the other answers are wrong
- January 1, 1992 — 1992 is too early; U.S. CFC production continued until the end of 1995.
- January 1, 2010 — 2010 is tied to the HCFC (R-22) phaseout for new equipment.
- January 1, 2020 — 2020 is when production and import of R-22 ended.
