Which refrigerant is that reference?
Environmental impacts · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
How CFCs and HCFCs destroy stratospheric ozone, and what that does to health and the environment.
The question
Ozone depletion potential (ODP) compares a substance with a reference refrigerant whose ODP is set at 1.0. Which refrigerant is that reference?
- R-22
- R-11Correct answer
- R-134a
- R-410A
Why “R-11” is correct
ODP is the ratio of a chemical's impact on ozone to that of the same mass of CFC-11 (R-11), whose ODP is defined as 1.0. Other CFCs and HCFCs are rated against it, and HFCs come out at zero.

Why the other answers are wrong
- R-22 — R-22 is an HCFC with an ODP well below 1.
- R-134a — R-134a is an HFC with an ODP of zero.
- R-410A — R-410A is an HFC blend with an ODP of zero.
